Government-owned since nationalization in 1969, Bank of India is one of India's leading banks, with about 3,100 branches including 29 branches outside India. BoI is a founder member of SWIFT, which facilitates provision of cost-effective financial processing and communication services.

In 2007 Bank of India acquired 76% of Indonesia-based PT Bank Swadesi.
